Using a DRTV (television export) Infomercial to Advertise

Direct Response Television, also referred to as DRTV, is the technical name of an infomercial. A DRTV infomercial is simply a method of advertising on television and requiring a direct response from customers to make a purchase. The methods of making contact to purchase a product include an email address, website, 800 number, or even a direct address. This direct response marketing technique has been around for a few decades now and it is really a popular method to advertise to customers. DRTV infomercials used to be for products like Ginsu knives and plastic storage units, however times have changes and there are many different products that are advertised via DRTV infomercials today. For example, you will find many products being advertised via DRTV infomercial including satellite television, credit cards, exercise equipment, cooking equipment, and more.

The Types of DRTV Infomercials

There are two types of DRTV infomercials. Long form DRTV infomercials are longer and can last about half an hour. Obviously, buying this amount of airtime is really expensive. As a result, usually only high dollar products are advertised via a DRTV infomercial that is long form. The other type of DRTV infomercial is short form. A short form DRTV infomercial usually lasts a couple of minutes or shorter. DRTV infomercials that are short form are more affordable for the seller and as a result more products can be advertised this way. Products like cosmetics and other affordable items will usually be advertised this way.

Neither short form nor long form DRTV infomercials would be aired at the going price for television airtime. Luckily, special rates are provided to DRTV producers so they can take up remnant airtime from the television stations and still advertise their products.

Many products sold via DRTV infomercials eventually make it to retail stores. It’s not uncommon to find these products sold in retail stores with the saying “As seen on TV” emblazoned on the box. This helps customers realize they are seeing the product that they had previously seen advertised via DRTV infomercial.
